Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh blueberries or thawed and drained frozen berries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice optional but brightens the berries
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour or cornstarch/arrowroot
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats optional, for topping

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking dish
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 2-quart baking dish with butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large bowl, gently toss the blueberries with sugar, lemon juice, and flour until evenly coated. This helps thicken the juices as it bakes and enhances flavor.
  3. Pour the blueberry mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. You should see some juices starting to collect at the bottom.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the oats (if using), cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Stir well to distribute the spices evenly.
  5. Add the melted butter to the dry ingredients and mix until crumbly. The mixture should resemble coarse crumbs or streusel.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the blueberries, covering as much surface as possible for a golden, crunchy crust.
  7. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for about 40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
  8. Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool slightly for 10 minutes. The juices will thicken a bit and the topping will set.
  9. Serve warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired. Enjoy the juicy berries with the crunchy, buttery topping.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the filling. You can also substitute honey or maple syrup for sugar in the filling for a different sweetness profile.
